This channel attempts to describe and demonstrate the art of flintknapping with some strumstick music as well. It is not about making money or gaining fame but sharing techniques or observations so others interested may improve their craft as well. My background is in chemistry and material science, every once in a while Gristle (half Yoda, half Wookie) will look in to see what is up.
Gen X Golden Age
The technology has finally caught up to our collective imagination for the Gen X community. We might have difficulty learning new tech but that stubborn trait gets us over the hump.

Resin Clovis Point Options
Переглядів 1816 годин тому
A few 3D printed resin examples of my clovis point. Being able to digitally scan a point means you can modify the point to test out styles. Eventually anyone will print one instead of learning to knap one. Whether this hurts or helps the knapping community in the long run is anyone's guess. As more of the scanned points become available A.I. will create more realistic points from scratch but fo...

Tumbling Flint-knapped Laser Filter Glass

Connection of between tumbling glass, laser fusion and Star Trek. Since I don't have a water cooled grinder I knapped some shapes and tumbled them in my new rock tumbler. The glass has a unique history as a laser filter and in this case for the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The large glass blocks do eventually crack but NIF does not part with the material, I asked. I suspect the material th...

Thanks. I have one that looks newer and it has a two prong plug that I'm sure is original. I think the practice of grounded electrical systems came about in the early 1960's everything about this one looks like something from the 1940's.
I am hoping someone has a manual to share.
I got mine in G 20 years ago & still love it. I've got a tip for learning chords: The top string is your root of a chord. At the same fret, the middle string is the 5th. You can add the third to this stack by holding the bottom string 2 frets higher with your ring finger. (ie. frets 0-0-2 will give you a G major chord. Frets 1-1-3 will be an A minor... and so forth diatonicly.) The outside strings are an octave apart, so try alternating the 3rd holding these shapes with your ring finger on either. I also use a slide occasionally Best of luck :-)
Well let's see your video, I have my wife hold the phone. If I can do it anyone can.
Finally I had to search forever to find a vid of yours with comments enabled lol do you any social media? I just had a couple questions I would love discuss with you if you have some time to spare.
My presence on media is limited due to time constraints these days. Gotta work.
@@Wertak68 ok thanks anyways sorry to have bothered you sir
You check these comments anymore?
My access to internet is limited so I don't see these comments until late in the day. Nature of my job, but there are a ton of flintknapping folks now. So I'm sure all your questions have been addressed. Paleomanjim is who I learn from.
Hey how somebody contact you other than on here
Email or call the Airforce facility, depending on reason.

I know this is an old video, but I just discovered the McNally Strumstick and I'm looking up videos while I wait for its delivery. I play piano somewhat and attempted ukulele. I'm hoping the Strumstick is as easy for me as it is for everyone else. I want to play something well! Thanks so much for the tips and info.
It is a fun challenge and you set your own pace. I annoyed the wife for the first three months after work. Now I am easily ignored because it sounds nice. I like it because it is cheap and battery free.
@@Wertak68 - LOL, I hope I don't annoy anyone as I start out. It's not as cheap as 10 years ago, but still battery-free!
I got mine 20 years ago. Still love it. I'd suggest trying a really soft pick. It helps on those upstrokes. Diatonic chords are also easy = hold the top 2 strings with your index finger at a fret and use your ring finger (or pinky) to hold the bottom string 2 frets higher. The two outside strings are the same note, just an octave apart. So, you could switch up holding the chords & catch top string with your ring finger. I also experiment with a slide for a real folksy blues sound. Post something when you get it. :-)
@@michaelknese gave away my felt pick years ago, keeping it simple.
@@michaelknese - Thanks for the tips. My learning is not going so well. I tried holding the two strings and using my ring or pinky finger on the other string. I can't reach my finger two frets up! My fingers are so inflexible, I'm thinking I have something structurally wrong with my hand. Plus, my fingers are a bit crooked. I thought you could play a Strumstick with just one finger; that's why I bought it. Disappointed. 😞
Question with your conversion chart: Is that for Strumstick in G or D? Thanks.
DAD tuning
DUDE! I've been wanting to learn more songs but the guitar and banjo tabs don't ever seem to quite transfer. Harmonica sites!!!! Thank you!
Can one still get it from yhat shop and if so what are prices like?
Gold mine rock is still there, 1 to 5 dollars per pound is the cost range.
@@Wertak68thanks dude.

Great informative video.Thanks
What type of nail do you use and flatten into the wedge shape? Reg nail with head cut off them shape on anvil and file it, is my guess.
That is exactly correct, just pick the right diameter nail for your handle.
I have the same oven and I would also like to automate it, do you have more information on how to do it?
It requires a solid state relay with heat sink and a good thermocouple. There are plenty of youtube videos on upgrading old furnaces.
thanks my friend, I'm going to test, I think it's not that complicated with a good pid controller
I live in Columbia Missouri about one and a half miles from rent Bridge Park I just started napping can you please tell me where I can find some Flint around Rock Bridge Park
I could only get mine to 1500f. Took over an hour.
A regular plectrum sounds a bit brassy, try a felt plectrum like many uke players use.
I did, thumb hasn't worn out yet.
The pick you're using is too stiff. The pick you have is generally used for playing melody or lean lines. The next time you visit a music store, get the most flexible (easy bending) pick you can find. You'll also find the shape of the pick makes a drastic difference in how it feels in your hand and how easy it is to use.
This was years ago, but I got yelled at for the loud delivered sound from even flexible pick use. So if I am going to stay on Mom's good side and forgo it.
👍
Cool
Awesome video! Man, I can't stand when "abo" knappers hate on folks that use copper.
So many gatekeepers out there telling people what they can and cannot do. Elitist snobs invading flint knapping? Too absurd to be believed.
Thx for the tips. Big help. Great playing stick with it. I prefer non pick as well
Very interesting. Will these techniques also work on square slabs? I have difficulty running flakes far enough to clear the tool marks off in the middle. I assume that I should probably be getting them on the second or third pass?
That is a good question, when you say square slab do you mean right angle edge or actual square slab found in some stain glass window projects?
Where exactly if in Belize you found this chert?
Unfortunately it was either a gift or purchased. Gem and mineral shows for the exotic material.
@@Wertak68 oh ok thanks. I am from Belize but on an island. One day will make it to mainland and get me some. Thanks again
If you have access to geological survey reports of Belize you might locate outcrops. Chert can also be associated with limestone as well.
@@Wertak68 cool thanks so much.
That obsidian is beautiful
Gave it to my sister-in-law in remembrance of her father. As dark as death can be if you look deeper the bright colors of our fondest memories emerge.
Love the video. I let out a very audible........."That's Hogan's Heroes!!!!" when you were playing that song. That brings back memories of my Dad calling me "Klink" when i did something stupid when i was a growing up......LOL!!!
This will get you half of my family recognizes the Flintstones theme music. Younger generation has no notion of what I am playing.
Please khus khus noise is very bad but l like the video
LOL Hogan's Heroes theme tune!!
That’s badass
It was really I have nothing to lose, but thanks.
Enjoyed your perspectives. Have you found any new obsidian sources in Eastern Idaho. I live in Island Park. 4 th year knapper. Thank you.
I live in Colorado now so it is mostly the Gold Mine Rock shop.
I think you've made great progress and are quite clever to use and transpose those harmonica tabs. I agree with you on using the fingers over the pick, too, it's such a better tone to my ears. Coming from someone with many years of stringed instrument experience, you're doing a great job. Keep on! Cheers!
If you ever want me to send you some beautiful Burlington Chert from Missouri shoot me a message. I live near one of the largest chert deposits in MO. Turns pink, Red, orange and even purple when heat treated. All I’d ask in return is you make a knife and sign it for me. Great post.
I think we can do that trade. During Winter things slow down but I always have some finished pieces gathering dust. My time in Missouri was visiting Columbia. The MURR is a research reactor and a science gem for the state.
I like the way it sounds when played with a pick.
Haven't seen one of these in a while. I used to build these at the KH Huppert factory in South Holland, Illinois, back in the mid 70's.
Well if you have any manuals, I know a guy that would appreciate more info.
I just got one, do you have any manuals that I can look at??
Do you still play?
I do, I got a chromatic version and sounded out Last Christmas for my wife. Her favorite! It is still fun.
You've got the strumming down on the strumstick for sure! It's tricky until you discover the best way to hold it. 🙂Great job on the tunes and great video! Keep on making music. 👍
Thanks, I am definitely not a performer but attempting to instruct others. Just got a chromatic version and it really opens up more tunes, just figured out Last Christmas the George Michaels song. Might do a video when time allows. Need to work out a tab format for it.
Talking batteries trolling motor battery if you could find something that would last longer. That would be nice. Most of the new outboard electric motors. Kills the batters fast.
I thought ferrite was the scientific name for Iron hence "fe"?
Ferrite is more of a common for yes iron (lll) oxide mixed with various metals. It is technically a ceramic. You might be thinking of ferric and ferrous, two oxidations of iron.
Many thanx I'll look in to it
Exellent video
It's cheating. You're not zig zagging the square edge. You're grinding. This is like half ass flake over grind technique.
Hehe there’s no such thing as cheating in flint knapping. Unless you’re using methods like this and claiming you went all abo. They are humans, making blades with the tools available to them, just like everyone else who has ever knapped. If I was interested in pretty flake patterns I’d use whatever worked best. I don’t even really like the idea of slabs but you can’t deny the efficiency. I’ve got a quartz slab right now which is why I find myself here. But it’s still not ‘cheating’ it just won’t feel nearly as satisfying as it would to start from a spall
I drive highway 6 every day. Where about did you find that?!
This was years ago, if you are thinking I mean the obsidian I am not. The grey chert was a band in the road cuts. It almost looked blue but close up grey.
I live not far from highway 6. Do yo recall whereabouts the road cut was that contained that chert?@@Wertak68
@@TheModernDayMountainMan it was so long ago, I remember seeing what looked like a light blue band and pulled over and collected some material. I find in general if you go to the top of hills that is where the larger flint and chert can be found. Erosion exposes it but it is before a river tumbles it to smaller pieces.
Wertak68 right on, thanks.
Gary Morgan I’m in Provo, let’s go on an adventure and find some.
I live in Kansas and work In the flint hills. Be on the lookout for bones in the flint I found a crosssection of an entire fish with its spine lodged inside. There is a complete cross section of the skeleton inside really cool to go through
I just move to Missouri on New Year's Day. I live about a mile and a half from Rockbridge Park. I'm new at Flint knapping. But going out to see if I can find some chert today
that brittle stuff reminds me of potch opal or some other hydrated silicate. it can make nice points but the angles are slightly different. i have tons of that rainbow, being in Oregon, it is fairly easy to get. i recently got 700 lbs for $200 and drove only 200 miles round trip. *not for sale
Rainbow is the best but it is the colors in it that determine rarity. Iridescent green is common but blue not often found.
That obsidian is the most beautiful piece I’ve ever seen. Hell ya
Thanks it was collected by an old couple that have since passed. It is almost magical in the sun.
What material is this? where did you get it?
Ferrite cores are found on old monitor to computer cables. The plates however are out of most folks price range.
Very informative video. Thank you for posting I myself have absolutely no musical instrument knowledge but wanting to learn a string instrument for my Autistic son to listen too. He loves to listen to blue Grass instruments like Banjos and mandolins so think a Stein stick might be a good starting point
You can also use the back corner of a pick for a fat sound.
What type of obsidian is this?
It is usually called Kilgore obsidian
Just the info I was looking for, thanks!! I got some of the dull chert obsidian from southern Idaho, none much bigger than a soft ball, was having some troubles spalling it.
If it is really round like a baseball, it can be incredibly difficult. A glancing blow can create a flat enough surface for a good percussion hit. Bigger is better in this case, a larger obsidian chunk is inherently more forgiving.
@@Wertak68 Ok awesome, thank you for the advice! Sounds like I might need to go find some more to play around with.
I received strumstick for a Christmas gift over 10 years ago, but I gave up because I could never learn. But then I came across with your video, and I got encouraged to try again. Thanks
As the kids say, you do you. There is no hurry, just take a little time when you can. I have a few really good tunes, impresses the extended family. It's really just for me, no batteries required entertainment.
Good morning, I am a chemistry professor in a technological institute in Venezuela, in our laboratory we have a Hupperts Mighty Midget Model 333 muffle, which we want to recover, the equipment works but its temperature meter does not, the needle does not move. The information available on the internet is basically about selling this "seniority" of equipment. Your video is the only interesting source I could find. Please, do you have information about this equipment that could be useful to repair the temperature meter? We would appreciate your help. Bye.
Unfortunately we simply replaced parts with new many years ago. I never found any legacy documents or repair manuals, sorry.
Ok, understood, then we will have to improvise, and in some way relive this little one. Thanks for the input, Bye.
hi, Did you manage to find more information on how to update this furnace?
@@alexibanezh unfortunately I have not. The best option if you want an operational oven would be new parts. Any broken furnace with intact heating coils can be easily updated relatively cheaply.
